My famous (ex) neighbours

November 29, 2009

It’s Sunday morning again and I seriously think my laziness is growing beyond control.

A friend is visiting Shanghai today and we were going to meet up for tea this afternoon. Turns out that her trip was already pre-arranged such that she’s going to be heading straight to the airport this afternoon, and that we will have to cancel our little tea gathering. And now I am still sitting at home with my pyjamas on.

Well I COULD go to the gym… in fact I should… but I just don’t have the mood for it.

Something’s serious wrong with me. Since when had I become so… demotivated?

Actually this might not be a bad thing. In the previous years I seldom had time to sit at home to really enjoy some leisure time. Maybe I should take it easy to begin with, for I know I am going to have a real busy week ahead with my boss visiting (yet again)!

Oh well I think I’m going to take it easy. Probably just pop down to Starbucks after I finished this post to have a light lunch and continue with my reading (and getting fat….).

And what I did yesterday was also to walk around my home area, which was rather nice. Not too touristy, not too expaty (you know there are places when you thought you were living in Europe because there were just too many expat stores and western cafes) and not too local either. So there’s a bit of everything. My complex is situation on a street that used to be famous quite a few decades back with several famous guys made their homes here, including one guy called 汪精卫 if you happened to know a bit of Chinese history, and also a few other officials. At the end of the road which meets the beginning of another one, there’s the old home of 张爱玲 the famous writer. From what I read, this area used to be what was called public concession (公共租介)as opposed to the French concession (which is also rather close to my home) where the French ruled. So I’m kind of like in between, which makes it all interesting.

And walking out of this little old street (actually NOT that little, but nevermind… it is comparatively…) is one large main road and is rather industrious. It’s probably one of the other major business area where some large offices and buildings are situated, making it very convenient for me as I could be well benefited with from the (THREE!) Starbucks around here as well as some other restaurants and a KFC. I made an effort to collect some delivery menus so that I won’t have to go out there eating alone when it’s cold. It’s always nicer to have a TV in front of you (or a computer if you need to watch TVB online like I do!) which makes the whole experience more pleasant.

One thing I like about Shanghai is that everywhere you go you see some historic places, and the Shanghai government has made a very nice effort preserving them. Being able to walk on a street where someone famous had walked on gives me a really miraculous feeling. While I’m in a cab traveling from one place to another, I always look curiously outside the window because I am pretty sure there’s something distinguishably historic on the street somewhere, and I don’t want to miss it. The driver must be thinking why this crazy girl is acting like a pet dog.

Ok Starbucks time and I’m getting hungry.
